REVIEW: Keiko Mecheri, Gourmandises

Notes: Praline, Powdery Notes, White Bitter Almonds, Rose Petal Jam, Saffron and Musk

Pros: Neither overly-sweet nor overly-floral; a near-unisex rose. No Angelic sweets here, this one heads for lighter turf, like L'Artisan's Jour de Fete meets Rosine.

Cons: Could project a bit more.

Bottleworthy? Yes, I think this could become addictive and comforting.

Where can I buy it? $80 for 75ml edp at Luckyscent.com

The Bottom Line: Imagine Opone as a bread and Gourmandises as a flaky pastry, where the former is dusty and straightforward, the latter is served on a beautiful plate with a berry-petal glaze. The saffron here adds a warm almost musky base while the almond notes are merely an accent. I'm intrigued with the rose petal jam accord - just enough rose to be interesting without making me ill. I'm looking for a decant!

Rating (out of 10): 7

I'm becoming more and more interested in saffron. Aside from CSP and Diptyque, what other Saffron scents do you love?

Marlen,
L'Artisan's Safran Troublant is wonderful. Laura Tonatto's Safram is much less interesting, but still quite enjoyable. Safron is also a player in Ormonde Jayne Ta'if and Czech & Soeake's much thought-after Dark Rose...

I remember thinking, when I tried Gourmandises, that the notes were somewhat misleading. One expects to get a super-sweet candy-like concoction, but in reality the gourmand nature of this scent is much less obvious, more abstract. I like that.

I love Aftelier's chocolate and saffron body oil. I bought it at a chocolate shop at the tourists' Ferry Bldg. Farmers Market. It is sumptuous. Yum.

In terms of overall sweetness, how would you compare it to KM Loukoum? I am assuming it is much less assertive than the SL Rahat Loukoum?

Colombina - I'll have to search for decants of those! I have tried the L'Artisan and did quite like it. Come to think of it, I think I bought Ta'if from Dragonfly (Diane) and it's at home waiting for me in Florida...as for Dark Rose, don't know that one.

Cait - another one to search for...we're gonna have to swap decants!

March - this is much gentler than Loukhoum which was just too overwhelming for (even) me. This has a softness and a subtlety absent from most gourmand scents.

I agree. I, too, have become hooked on the tangy presence of saffron and its ability to save sweet from cloying or add character to swirling spice.

I love the saffron in Czech & Speake Dark Rose and also in Agent Provocateur, have you checked those out yet?
