FOR THE HOME: Red Flower Candles, Japanese Peony

What is it? This is a 6 oz candle in round glass container. Inlcuded with the candle and packed into the top of the glass container is a small amount of potpourri with the same scent.

What does it smell like? Well, the scent is Japanese Peony...so, how can I describe this? Imagine a soft peony scent with a hint of Damask rose and a little green tea thrown in for good measure. Light, fresh, soft, with a little zest.

Pros: Good throwing power, moderate price, the potpourri is a nice kitschy touch.

Cons: Would be better if it were soy-based.

Where can I buy it? $34 at Amazon.com

The Bottom Line: Reasonable price, good throwing power, nice scent, and cute extras. This would make a great gift.

appreciating a japanese peony candle

noble and grand, generous and fragrant, this heavy pale pink flower blooms on small trees in the north of japan every spring. it is prized for its poised beauty and infinitely soft petals. a favorite for use in the centuries old art form of ikebana, it flourishes with careful cultivation, quieet patience, warm rain, lush clouds and shade from the afternoon sun.

Rating (out of 10): 7

Any other products you can think of with the scent of Peony? I'm a sucker for Shiseido Eudermine!

RNocean - Well, I've only ever tried one other - Egyptian Chamomile and found that I could hardly smell it, but it was a mini trvale candel, so I chalked it up to size. I will be doing a review on Bendel Orange Blossom soon, so please stay tuned and post your comments!

Awwww, Marlen, how could you!? Now I have a brand new lemming to feed, and my flat is already full with cages of squeaking, hungry, insistent rodents (are lemmings rodents?)!!!!! Peonies are my favourite flowers, and your description has made me crave them! Thanks!

Are these really worth the price? They've always smelled nice in the store, but It seems like very little candle for a lot of money. I'm content with my Bendel Candles as well for now. And Tocca Pushkar. And one day when I think I deserve it - one of the Bond No.9's.

Mark - I received mine as a gift and the price and size are about half that of Diptyque. The presentation with the potpourri is nice and I found the throw to be excellent. Tocca? Wishlist! Bond 9? I'm dreaming! Marriage Freres? Everyone needs to try these!

well, the guy at Bond was right though, when he said to me that you don't even have to burn one of their candles, all you need to do is take off the lid and let it sit. So, I guess that's a step in the right direction for those of us who really want it. But then the problem is, well, Which?

Mark - that's like my Diptyque candle - for an entire year, I didn't have to burn it! You also gotta check out the Marriage Freres candles!
