REVIEW: Guerlain, Habit Rouge (1965)

Notes: Orange, Limette, Lemon, Bergamot, Spices, Patchouli, Vanilla, Leather notes.

Pros: Timeless. Fresh enough for warmer weather, sophisticated enough for evening.

Cons: "Timeless" may also spell "outdated" to some.

Reminds me of: Roger Gallet Extra Vielle.

Development: Minimal.

Longevity: The current EDT lasts very well on me. This is no tame fragrance.

Sillage: Just right.

Where can I buy it? $21.38 for a 3.4 oz edt spray tester at Scentiments.com

Bottleworthy? Everyone's gotta try this at least once...and for that price, why not go whole hog?

The Bottom Line: One of Guerlain's more recent masterpeices, Habit Rouge is unquestionably one of the finest examples of 20th century men's perfumery. But does it smell good? Well yes; an unusual blend of vanilla and citrus with powdery leather basenotes, Habit Rouge always reminds me of a fine, full-bodied gin. Picture a sleek 1960's mahogany and chrome bar. Perched atop is a heavy crystal glass filled with an aromatic clear liquid and ice. The air is perfumed with Habit Rouge as a young Sinatra croons in the background...

Rating (out of 10): 8

Lisa - I do enjoy Imperiale but find it far too fleeting...

Marlen, your timing is uncanny! I have been thinking about purchasing Habit Rouge for months (I was given a sample by a fellow basenoter). I just found a bargain on Ebay, and my bottle should be here any day! Love the spice, love the vanilla, love the leather!! (some of my favorite notes in a fragrance) Habit Rouge is very appropiate for men or women, day or night, any time of year.

Hello dear: This is casi my HG, this fragance is everything I want to smell like in winter, even though sometimes it seems to me, it smells old, but I can't find no one else where I live wearing this, so, this is my fragance. Maybe a little loud for summer, although I've wore HR in Santo Domingo on August and it smell right,
Best regard from Spain

I love Habit Rouge - it really is like no other. Reading the notes it might seem that it's just like all the other masculines of the era, but it truly must be experienced to be believed. I have actually worn this myself I like it so much. Its quiet elegance is unique among mens fragrances.

Marlen, I really enjoy your reviews of older fragrances such as this. Quality never goes out of style!

You are so right about being similar to R&GEV!, i love both frags by the way but i find the drydown of habit rouge much better and more sensual than the top notes of R&G's frag. I somehow relate it to a house on the woods my uncle used to have...later on, i had a black horse and whenever i went to the country, i used it as to forget the smell of the horse, wich i didn't like...(the smell of the horse i meant, the horse i was fond of).

Well, well, well, this is certainly a popular scent! LOL - defintiely one of my all-time favorite in terms of originality.

I have not had a bottle of this in twenty-odd years, but your review makes me want to pick one up again; this was the second bottle of scent I ever bought (after Eau Sauvage: am I dating myself or what?) and I considered it my "evening" scent. My Mom however, decided that it would be her "day" scent: i.e. "I'm in my son's room indexing his sock drawer and I'll just spritz a little of this on to tide me over until I make up an excuse (dusting, bringing in fresh towels, making sure the room hasn't shrunk in size or the floor peeled off) to come in later and re-apply"
